Transient right hemidiaphragmatic paralysis following subclavian venous catheterization: possible implications of anatomical variation of the phrenic nerve -a case report-

Phrenic nerve paralysis is an unusual complication associated with central venous catheterization. Various mechanisms have been proposed. We present a case of transient right hemidiaphragmatic paralysis after subclavian venous catheterization. We hypothesize that anatomical variation of the phrenic nerve was responsible for this complication.

Respiratory distress associated with physical signs of fluid in the chest should arouse suspicion that the venous catheter has perforated the wall of the vein. The complications of central venous catheterization are reviewed and three cases of hydrothorax are presented. Comments on the pre...

Novel electromyographic monitoring technique for prevention of right phrenic nerve palsy during cryoballoon ablation.

BACKGROUND Right phrenic nerve palsy (PNP) is the most frequent complication of cryoballoon ablation. Diaphragmatic electromyography can predict PNP with a comfortable safety margin. Our goal was to evaluate the feasibility, efficacy, and safety of electromyography-guided PN monitoring using a novel hepatic vein approach for prevention of PNP. METHODS AND RESULTS This study includes 57 patien...

Right phrenic nerve palsy: a rare presentation of thoracic aortic aneurysm.

Phrenic nerve palsy causing hemidiaphragm paralysis is a very uncommon feature of thoracic aortic aneurysm. In one case, a 45-year-old man complained of chronic chest pain, dysphagia, and hoarseness of voice; posteroanterior view chest radiograph revealed lobular enlargement of the superior mediastinum and elevated right hemidiaphragm. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) of the thorax re...
